How To Use Nissan ProPILOT Assist

January 30th, 2023 by
Once you experience the Nissan ProPILOT Assist, you will wonder how you ever lived without it. It helps you with driving by keeping you centered in your lane and keeping at a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of you. It’s almost like something from a futuristic sci-fi movie. Not quite a self-driving car, but it’s heading that way. Let’s explore!

What Is Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist?

ProPILOT Assist is technology in some Nissan models to help keep you and others on the road safe using the Intelligent Cruise Control and Steering Assist technologies. It’s a hands-on driver assistance system. Because it is hands-on driver assisted, you must have your hands on the steering wheel. It’s intended for the highway and will use the gas, brake and steering. The Steering Assist system uses front-facing cameras and radar to sense what’s going on and keeps you staying in your lane. When driving in traffic and the vehicle in front of you slows down, the Intelligent Cruise Control will reduce your speed. When the vehicle ahead of you stops, you will stop automatically. If you are stopped for less than three seconds, and then the vehicle in front of you goes, you will go automatically. If you are stopped longer than three seconds, you can begin the operation again by stepping on the gas or pushing up on the Cancel switch, to the left of the ProPILOT Assist blue button, towards the Res+ button.

How Does The ProPILOT Assist Work?

The radar sensor in the front of your vehicle will maintain a gap with the vehicle ahead you, keeping you at a distance that you have preset. The camera in the front of your vehicle, near the top of the windshield, recognizes lane markers and will keep your vehicle centered during single-lane driving and will do so on slight curves.

How To Use ProPILOT Assist

1. Press the ProPILOT Assist blue button located on the right side of the steering wheel.
2. When you reach your desired speed, press Set.
3. Set your desired distance.

When activated, the screen will display a green road, green lines going across the road and a green steering wheel. The green road and steering wheel indicate that the Steering Assist is active. The green lines going across are the distance setting for the vehicle in front of you and indicate that the Intelligent Cruise Control is activated. In order for the Steering Assist to work, there must be clear, consistent lane markers on both sides of the vehicle. When the camera sees those lines, the system will chime and the green road lines will appear on the screen. If you are driving and there are no more lane lines, you will hear two chimes and the road lines will turn gray and the system will deactivate.

If the system does not detect hands on the steering wheel, a red steering wheel warning will appear on the screen. Then the warning will flash. You will hear alerts and the brakes will pulsate. At this time, if no hands are detected, an emergency alert will sound and the vehicle will slowly stop.

Wendle Nissan Tips

• The camera is located behind the rearview mirror, controlling the Steering Assist. If you can’t see the lines on the road, it can’t see them; therefore, it won’t be able to detect the lines and will not operate.
• If there is rain and your wipers are on high, Steering Assist will turn off.
• If there is snow or ice blocking the radar in the front, you will get a message to clean it off.
• Keep in mind that the Nissan ProPILOT Assist is a driver assist system, not a self-driving system. You, as the driver, will be in control.
