How To Use 4WD On The Nissan Frontier

What Is 4WD?
How To Use The 4WD
The four-wheel drive system allows you the option of selecting among three drive modes. It comes equipped with a 4WD shift switch that electronically controls the operation of the transfer case. You can easily rotate the switch to move between each mode.
Two-wheel drive: This is for normal driving conditions, typically for dry paved roads.
Four-wheel drive high: This mode provides greater traction for rocky, snowy and sandy roads. It can be used up to 62 miles per hour, but no higher.
Four-wheel low drive: This mode provides maximum power and traction for situations such as driving on steep grades, or on rocky, sandy or muddy roads. The maximum safe speed is 31 miles per hour.
When shifting into four-wheel low, off-road mode will be activated, if equipped. Off-road mode turns on the Around View Monitor allowing for you to check for obstacles surrounding the vehicle. You can shift into four-wheel drive high while driving at no more than 62 miles an hour. But to shift into or out of four-wheel drive low,
you must be stopped. You must depress the brake pedal, move the shift lever to neutral and then push the shift switch in when changing into or out of four-wheel drive low.
When To Use 4WD
Driving on snow and ice: Using 4WD during winter conditions can give your tires the grip they need to keep you on the road.
Rough terrain: 4WD helps navigate uneven landscapes. The added torque will assist when off-roading and driving in deep sand.
To get out when stuck: If you get stuck in the mud, 4WD will give your truck four wheels with traction to help get you out.
4WD Tips
Do not drive on dry hard surfaces in 4WD high or low. It will cause unnecessary noise, excessive tire wear and increase the fuel used by the truck.
When engaging the system, you should be traveling in a straight line or stopped so that the wheels are not turning at different speeds.
